Arthur Brooks has been practicing and performing music for over fifty years. He has studied and/or performed and recorded with Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Alan Silva, William Parker, Stan Strickland, Sydney Smart, Ted Daniel, and many others. He was a member of the Bennington College faculty for over twenty-three years. He has been Artist in Residence at Middlebury College, School of New Dance Development (Amsterdam), Rotterdam Improvisers Pool, among other institutions. Brooks has collaborated and/or performed with Judith Dunn, Pauline deGroot, Christine Svane, Susan Sgorbati, Peter Schmitz, and Patricia Bardi, The Architects Dance Company, and most notably, Penny Campbell and the Giants of Sciants, a company of improvising dancers and muscians. He has been a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Vermont Council on the Arts grant, a number of commissions, and recognitions.

Ensemble V was founded at Bennington College in 1973 as part of the curriculum of the new Black Music Studies program. It was one of seven ensembles led by teaching faculty of the program founded and led by the late creative innovator and educator, Bill Dixon. Ensemble V began as a group performing the original works of its founder and leader, Arthur Brooks. The work combined elements of composition and improvisation informed by the ability of the participants and the aesthetic directives of its leader. The group had many incarnations over the past thirty years, and has evolved to the present incarnation. The musicians are recognized professionals who have performed nationally and internationally, and have been associated with the ensemble from as little as six to over twenty years. We are proud to present our music to you.
