Xfest small2

program

Open Field Initiative, 119 Gallery and Gateway City Arts present XFest 2015, a festival of improvised music, visuals and movement.

The format of the festival is simple and challenging: on Friday and Saturday nights 24 visiting artists and 72 local artists perform in 24 20min sets, 12 sets per night. On Saturday afternoon we plan to run workshops and open sessions. On Sunday afternoon local artists meet and local groups perform.

“Improvisation can give us the skills to deal with many social and aesthetic issues of the twenty-first century. Although we have become adept at talking about aesthetic hybridity, cultural alerity, crossing borders (both earthly and cyber), and global fusion; few of us have really studied what physical and intellectual practice will make our bodies and minds ready for this brave new world … Improvisation can lead us out of our habitual responses by opening up alternative experiences – new physical sensations and appetites … Although this practice begins with attentiveness to corporeal experience it also develops a mental flexibility that can provide an intellectual map with which to chart new pathways for negotiating awkward and difficult crossings.”
~ Ann Cooper Albright, Taken By Surprise

Photoshopped JPG opI am drawn to the inherent elegance in the pattern of things—and the curious way order somehow finds a way to reassert itself even in the most chaotic formations. The work takes shape observing the relationship between natural and constructed environments—investigating the interconnectivity between the physical and spatial structures within the landscape and the cultural artifacts that reference the processes and systems existing in nature.

There is a dialogue between the landscape experience and my working process—accumulating marks arise out of experience and intuition—articulating rhythms in line and color—constructing surfaces in layers of thought. Abstract forms emerge—informed by the shapes, colors and sensations in the aesthetic experience of place.

The work develops in a state of being between—interpreting the relationship between mind and material—reconciling the division between form and formlessness—tracing the intangible structures between space and place to give form to my thoughts.

Cat de Leon "The Word"

After celebrating Kerouac in poetry and spoken word for many years, 119 Gallery is excited to host a multi-media installation about the poet, by Lynn artist Cat de Leon, opening October 10th. As part of Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Festival weekend (October 9-13th), de Leon pays tribute to one of New England’s finest writers with her show “Up You Go, Little Smoke – ‘The Holy Hipness of Jack Kerouac.’” On display will be a number of large collages, several triptychs, art on window frames, charcoal portraits, aged photos mounted on metal, assemblages, and an audio collage.

Kerouac and his Beat cohorts left us their words, which still resonate with the artist, and his readers. After immersing themselves in de Leon’s spiritual offering, encompassing painting, collage, sound and more, gallery visitors will have more than words to call to mind the next time Kerouac’s name is evoked in Lowell. They will have the recall of a full sensory broadside, and perhaps feel a bit of the rapture of the artist and her subject. “Up You Go, Little Smoke” opens October 10th and runs through November 1st.

The reception takes place during LCK! Weekend, on Sunday October 12th at 7pm. During the reception, Kerouac’s unique blend of the spoken word, connected to the beat of jazz musicians, will be celebrated with a special performance by his friend and collaborator David Amram.

Nothing Saves You More is an installation of new prints and paintings by home-grown artists Justin Campaniello and Olivia Stanislas, curated by Victoria Belakhov. Exploring ideas about transience and experience, the artists express the paradox of trying to capture a moment in time, while being acutely aware of its ephemeral nature. Both the artists and received their training in art at UMass Lowell, and have exhibited at 119 Gallery. Campaniello and Belakhov both completed internships with with us. Meet the artists at their reception during Lowell Open Studios on Oct. 4th.
