Engagements in Light, Sound & Water
Paintings, Prints and Video
by
Denise Manseau

Reception: Thursday June 20 6-9pm

Denise Manseau is a visual artist. Her process is one of seeing, perceiving and making. The relationship between her hand and elements of chance is essential to this process, navigating a delicate balance between uncertainty and control. Her research takes place in the confluence of art, science and technology as she investigates the nature of the constantly changing relationships in the environment—establishing a ground between the physical and psychological definition of these locations.

While drawing and painting are at the core of her practice, her methodology has recently expanded beyond the two-dimensional surface. Constructing three-dimensional drawings in wire and exploring vibration and light as a medium in sound-based drawings and video installations.

Currently she is a Graduate Candidate in the MFA Program at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She lives just north of Boston and maintains a studio in Lowell.

Curated by Denise Manseau with Duy Hoang, Sam Riebe, and Eileen Ryan.

“Barsky has been a key figure in the DC experimental/DIY scene for the last few years, and is also a member of kraut-influenced DC combo the Plums. In his solo guise as Insect Factory, he traverses the worlds of guitar improvisation and subtle sound manipulation. Barsky balances light and dark, tension and resolution in his pieces, but never in obvious ways. Instead, his music surrounds and envelops in a gauzy, cloudy warmth while still retaining an interest in shaking things up. His music alludes to static transmissions, garbled communication via invisible airwaves, alien landscapes, and dying technologies, while still retaining an interest in melody and traditional beauty. The juxtaposition of these ideas and approaches lends the record a complexity that goes deep beyond its shiny surfaces.”

Add a new dimension and texture to your dance and see a wonderful performance!

The final “Moving with the light” dance jam of the Spring series will happen Saturday June 29 at 119 Gallery in Lowell. (note change from the usual third Saturday). 119 Gallery is the nicest space I’ve ever performed at and has a movement–friendly hardwood floor.

There will be a solo performance by Butoh inspired dancer Rachael Rosner at 8 PM, which will be immediately followed by a jam in which improvised movement, improvised music, and improvised video interact as equals — each responding to and respectful of the others..

Doctor T. – Video Improvisations with two excellent dance-aware musicians:

Eric Crawley – Harpejji, Wave Drum, electronics
Glynis Lomon – cello, Aquasonic, voice

and YOU — movement. All styles and skill levels welcome.

“I know little to nothing about Barn Owl except that I like their name. This 3″ CD-R EP is the first I’ve ever heard of them. This is some crazy, disjointed stuff. It’s noisy and abrasive. Loaded down with heavy percussive blasts, Barn Owl is also heavy on bass splurging. In between all the record, there’s all sorts of spazzed bass noodling. It’s like autistic music or something. But it’s also fantastic. There’s all sorts of cut-up and manipulated electronic and synthesized sounds mixed in with the drums and bass. It’s disorienting at times, like being totally smashed and hanging your head over the toilet waiting to puke. In fact, I wouldn’t advise listening to this when you’re drunk b/c it’ll make the room spin. All of these tracks work in conjunction to give you one fucked-up listening experience that flows together. I still don’t know dick about Barn Owl, but I get the feeling they’re a great live band and are someone I wanna hear more of. Oh, and it comes in an a-typically normal sleeve (something I don’t ever expect from Imvated)”.
