This will be one exciting weekend here at 119. This is the 3rd year and it's getting better and better. Any living, compassionate life form who cares about experimental sounds/images or free improvisation absolutely needs to be here!

The positive power of city's youth
The Lowell Sun
Updated: 02/03/2011 06:39:19 AM EST

Recently, I attended an event that made me proud to be working for the youth of Lowell.

The Lowell Community Health Center Teen Coalition presented, "We Got the Power," a program of "community healing through art." At the 119 Gallery, in a studio about the size of a small classroom, approximately 100 people came together to share original artwork, poetry, dance and spoken presentations on the general themes of peace and youth empowerment. With poems, songs and spoken words, the youth of Lowell presented their definitions of peace, love, courage and unity.

The performers' words were heartfelt and sincere, and the audience's cheers were supportive and encouraging. Nobody in the room cared about being first in their class; nobody kept any score; nobody cared about winning or losing. And yet everyone in the room came away a winner. Their messages showed that they understand the realities of violence, loss, weapons and drugs, but they hold onto a positive hope that by working together, the youth of Lowell can create peace and security. One young man closing the show summed it up: "We young people do care."

Following recent incidents of violence in Lowell, this program convinced me that the youth of this city want a much better life than the headlines sometimes suggest. It is up to the rest of us to help them reach those goals.
