Kapsalis / Ivanovic Duo

Sunday September 5 5pm @ the Chailey Mansion (not at the gallery). Donations appreciated.

An afternoon and evening of great performances featuring the Kapsalis / Ivanovic Duo, the ever popular/unpredictable birdorgan. Throw in two performance/noise artists also from ME and a couple more locals. All this and more … live video projection by Greg Kowalski. Potluck, bring a dish to share.

Kapsalis / Ivanovic Duo
[Chicago]
birdorgan [NH, MA]
Theft Able / Wright Duo [ME, MA]
Crank Sturgeon [ME]
Stephanie Lak [Lowell]
(preliminary schedule, performers listed in reverse order)

Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic represent the perfect alliance of ten-fingered guitar virtuosity, outstanding melodic themes, and dynamic rhythmic variations. Kapsalis’ Spanish-inflected playing complements their previously unexplored style that challenges the boundaries of pop music structure, juxtaposing his style with the world renowned Serbian compositional and improvisational mind Goran Ivanovic. Goran’s unique and rarely found talents set you forth on a cinematic array of emotions. Sophisticated, yet rebellious, this acoustic ensemble nods its head towards tradition but totally disregards technical conventions. They experiment in the melding of classical, various styles of traditional folk, and rock music, each receiving equal time.

Produced by 119 Gallery and Greg Kowalski. For more info email.

Ben Miller Soundscape Tour + Marc Bisson

Monday May 3 8pm, donations appreciated.

Ben Miller [Brooklyn NY] - prepared guitar, electronics
with
Joe Burgio [Boston] - movement
Walter Wright[Lowell] - video
+
Marc Bisson [Manchester NH] - prepared guitar, objects

Ben Miller
explores the “prepared guitar” as a form of auditory degeneration. This mulitphonic instrument has two humbucker pickups (bridge/nut) and three contact pickups (headstock/bridge/body). The guitar is placed on its back with its six strings strung approximately one fifth below standard tuning with intonation more often arbitrary. The strings are excited by metal slides, springs, combs, violin bow, eBow, etc. and “prepared” with various capos, binder clips, screws, and other found objects. Retaining a stereo output, Miller adds a score of analog and digital electronics, Casio SK1, cassette tape, radio, and the liberal use of a Bixby tailpiece. String-sounds also occur below the bridge, above the nut, and from the guitar body itself. A guitar pick and the traditional means of a “neck with frets” is rarely implemented. Approaches to the instrument extend from subtle ambiance to violent sonic outbursts with the end result being a textured, layered, multiphonic soundscape.

Joe Burgio
born in Boston Massachusetts, received his first formal dance training from Jody Weber at Green Street Studios in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the Dance Complex, also in Cambridge, he studied Experiential Anatomy, Somatic Movement and Contact Improvisation with Debra Bluth. He has appeared with several dance-theater groups, including Callie Chapman-Korn’s Zoedance and Rose-Pasquerello-Beachamp’s inFluxdance, which made an award-winning appearance at the 2006 Montreal Fringe Festival. He has performed extensively with experimental and improvisational musicians, and has on-going collaborations with Katt Hernandez, Lou Cohen, Matt Samolis and Jack Wright. His principle area of interest is intermedia performance, and has worked on many projects with video artist and musician Walter Wright: electrovideomove, the BopAnts, Egg Sucking Dogs, the dadallamas, and the Apocalypso Trio, with Shayna Dulberger. Joe leads bodydrama, a movement ensemble rooted in Butoh aesthetic, and teaches informally in Boston’s Fort Point arts community.

Walter Wright
is a multimedia improviser. Pre-recorded imagery is de/reconstructed on his video performance system, the Video Shredder, creating unique and stunning visuals. He plays the analog synthesizer. He has a Doepfer, a Little Boy Blue, and a touch-sensitive BPNG. He has immersed himself in music, video, and dance improvisation. In 2003, he enrolled in Goddard College’s MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program, graduating in 2007. He focused on “improvisation as a way of being present in/to the world.”
