Squawk-a-Doodle Workshop

Sunday February 14 11am-3pm, $20

Crank Sturgeon instructs this workshop on how to build a Squawk-a-Doodle, which is a simple tone generator using an ordinary speaker cone and 9 volt battery. Also known as a “Victorian Synthesizer”, the class delves into building a lo-fi noise instrument using a 19th Century technological approach. For all experience levels, the workshop will also teach proper soldering techniques; and everyone will get to take home their very own!

Additionally, Crank will show microphone techniques with the synth (using contact microphones); so bring your own mic! Crank will have mics available at reduced pricing.

The Melting Pot will focus on ethnic food especially of the people in the Lowell area. Some classes will have shopping trips but we might not be able to do it all the time.

Lowell is known for it’s culture diversity the best way to learn about another culture is to learn about it’s food. In the cooking class you will learn what the unique vegetables and meats are and where to find them. There will be a hands on cooking demo and a buffet lunch after. There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The classes is taught by Y Woodward of Rebel Chef who is a foodie, art enthusiast and the Executive Director of the Gallery 119.

This will be my first class for the Fall, Indian Vegeatrian -

Aloo Ghobi (spicy cauliflower and potatoes)
Paneer with spinach (Indian cheese in a creamy spinach stew)
Spicy Vegetable Samosa with tamarind sauce

This month Y Sok Woodward of Rebel Chef Catering returns for her third installment of ‘The Melting Pot,’ a cooking demo series that focuses on the creating and experiencing the many ethnic cuisines of people in the Lowell area.

Come inside and warm up to a lively, hands on class that will give you all the info you need to whip up a fabulous Greek meal. After you’ve watched Y work her magic, you’ll be treated to a buffet lunch of the food you just watched her prepare.

   Spanikopita (spinach pie)
   Grilled Lamb & Chicken Kebabs
   Tzatziki (cucumber yogurt sauce)

Art is all a matter of taste

LOWELL — In a world where frozen dinners are king and ready-made “gourmet” dominates the refrigerated section, a home-cooked meal could easily be deemed refreshing. And what could be more refreshing than all-American, old-fashioned comfort food?

Quite a few things.

The 119 Gallery on Chelmsford St. in Lowell looks to deliver an escape from everyday eats. On Sunday, Jan. 25, at noon, it will introduce culinary classes that celebrate cultural diversity through food.

Chef Y Sok Woodward of Rebel Chef Catering will guide participants through a hands-on cooking demonstration, which will be followed by a buffet-style luncheon.

Sound Art

Saturday July 26 11am- 4pm, $50 members/$75 non-members

Class with Walter Wright. Using a simple audio recorder participants gather sounds and then with basic sound editing software, create their own compositions.

Supported in part with a grant from Lowell Cultural Council and Massachusetts Cultural Council.
