WHAT IS “DOIN’ IT TOGETHER!” Actually I still don’t totally know, but its like one big party of music, art, crafts, poetry, old/new friends and of course vegan food! HERE’S a brief description of the main event: We take people from all different bands and solo projects, mix em up to form new bands for one day…. We have all kinds of people signed up who play different styles, mostly grungey/rock/punk stuff, but that doesn’t mean you have to play like that to be a part of this. you have just ONE day to write 3 songs or 25 minutes of music at pre-determined practice spaces we arrange for you… Then in front of one awesome group of people you preform that night at the 119 Gallery!! Last year was sooo fun and everyone wrote amazing songs, there was lots of dancing and excitement to watch each others “bands”!!

Living Things (NOT to be confused with the glam-punk band) and is Stephen Cooper, Sam Sowyrda (both from the Dan Deacon Ensemble & eagle ager) and our friend Pete Hanson. its a music group working with composed and improvised material with the purpose of mixing theatrical and performative action into the musical setting. our current project utilizes everything from instrument beasts, transgender voice therapy, wind-up toy-orchestra with a tuba-headed conductor, contrabassnake clarinet, and a feedback puppy, to compositions for motorized wind instruments, woodwinds, euphonium, percussion, feedback, guitar, and others.

Spirit and Dust are intrepid tourers of the 50 states, a hardy band of minstrels that conquer boredom in audiences with a musical outreach that could very easily be just the thing that the Obama team needs to get America in shape: it’s a musical stimulus plan! This all may sound like hyperbole. However, when you consider that the leader of the band, Kristen Sylvester, is only 19, and has the “old sorrow” in her voice of the most traveled box-car crooner, you get an injection of hope that her band’s kind of earnestness in songwriting is what will carry Philadelphia into its own, alongside Nashville, Seattle, etc…” —Mike, Autism Living and Working

Not the Wind, Not the Flag

Thursday March 4 8pm, donation requested.

Not the Wind, Not the Flag: [Toronto Canada]
Colin Fisher - guitar, bouzouki, ney, tenor sax, guzheng, hulusi, percussion,
Brandon Valdivia - trap set, Mbira, slit drum, percussion

Music is a way of accessing the divine. Vibration is the echo of our creation. For Colin and Brandon the experience of music is a transformative tool. A conduit for gnosis and discovering the true self. On any occasion their music could echo the traditions of Balinese music, West African music, Persian or Turkish music or it could be devastatingly loud Post-Hardcore, Noise, Free jazz eruptions. Or all of the aforementioned at once! The music refrains from being derivative but comes from a place of deep respect for the music that has lifted and guided their spirits.

The House of 1000 Dust Catchers

Tuesday January 12 - Saturday February 13, 12noon - 5pm
Reception Saturday January 16, 6-9pm

Items and Ephemera from the collection of Marc Bisson and Dei Xhrist
with additional treasures provided by Dave Bacon

The majority of these pieces are second hand; garage sales, ex-garage sales, swap meets, second hand stores, friends with no use or lost storage space. The majority of these pieces were mass produced; part of a collection, variations on a popular theme, some sort of necessary element to complete a group, cheap efforts to fulfill a casual demand.

Marc and I find appeal in things that, out of their original context, are bizarre, horrible, silly, poorly executed, distorted, patinaed. There is a mix of pathos and brilliance; what kind of production environment birthed some of these figures? At the very least, everything here is the result of someone’s endeavors. We’ll never know their names but we can at least preserve their fruitiest of labors from the trash bin for a little longer.

We would like to thank Dave Bacon for lending a few boxes of his most easily reached toys and soup boxes. Dave is an auction and thrift store trawler with a predilection for stacking things and standing calmly as gravity overcomes his precarious towers. He can be reached at yottoys1@gmail.com
